Applications

Common Use Cases

Receipt Reconciliation: Travelers can remove VAT from gross receipt totals to file for tax refunds or expense reports.
International Shopping: Shoppers can estimate the final price of goods in countries with high sales taxes.

The Maths Behind the Calculation

Add: Gross = Net * (1 + Rate) | Remove: Net = Gross / (1 + Rate)

VAT is a consumption tax placed on a product whenever value is added at each stage of the supply chain and at the point of sale. To add it, you multiply by 1 plus the decimal rate. To reverse it, you divide by that same factor. Using simple subtraction (e.g., Gross - Rate) is mathematically incorrect for reversing tax.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Sales Tax and VAT?

Sales tax is collected only at the final sale to the consumer. VAT is collected at every stage of production and distribution, though the consumer pays the final cost.

How do I remove VAT from a total price?

You divide the total by 1.xx, where xx is the tax rate. For example, to remove 20% VAT, divide by 1.20.

Is VAT the same in every country?

No, rates vary widely. The UK is 20%, many EU countries are around 20-25%, while other countries may be lower.
