The Maths Behind the Calculation

Volume (cy) = (Length × Width × Depth_ft) / 27

We convert all dimensions to feet to find Cubic Feet, then divide by 27 to get Cubic Yards. For bags, we divide the total cubic feet by the bag size (2 or 3).

How deep should mulch be?

A depth of 2 to 3 inches is ideal for most applications. More than 4 inches can suffocate plant roots, while less than 2 inches may not effectively stop weeds.

How much does a yard of mulch cover?

One cubic yard covers approx. 324 sq ft at 1 inch deep, 162 sq ft at 2 inches deep, or 108 sq ft at 3 inches deep.
