Estimates assume loose volume. Tonnage based on density input.
Calculate the tonnage and volume of gravel, crushed stone, sand, or topsoil required for your project. Whether calculating for a driveway, pathway, or base layer, this tool helps you order the correct amount and plan logistics.
Weight = (Volume in yds³) × DensityFirst, we calculate cubic footage (LxWxH), convert that to cubic yards (÷27), and then multiply by the material density (lbs/yd³) to get total pounds. Finally, we divide by 2,000 to get Tons.
A cubic yard of standard gravel typically weighs between 2,400 and 2,900 lbs, depending on moisture, rock size, and composition. We use 2,700 lbs default.
For a new gravel driveway, a depth of at least 4-6 inches is recommended. For refreshing an existing top layer, 2-3 inches is usually sufficient.
Gravel settles and compacts over time or when tamped. You may need to order 10-15% more material to achieve your final desired depth after compaction.
